Dealing with hair breakage has been part of my natural hair journey. Over the years my natural hair has been through ups and downs. Constant breakage can keep you from reaching your hair growth goals. We all have setbacks but the key is knowing how to recover.
My most recent setback was caused by a combination of medical issues and stress. I experienced several patches of breakage through out my hair and now I’m working to regrow those areas. Here are a few simple tips on how to recover from breakage.
1. Identify the source of the hair breakage. If you don’t know what is causing the problem you may unintentionally damage your hair again. Things to consider include your diets, changes in hair products, heat use, whether or not you are using chemicals, etc….
2. Take a vitamin designed for hair, skin, and nail growth such as GNC UltraNourish Hair. If you have nutritional deficiencies you may also consider other supplements. You may also need to improve your diet and water intake.
3. Deep condition your hair 2x per week if possible (atleast 1x per week). Consider using a reconstructing or protein conditioner. These help strengthen weakened or damaged strands. You can also add henna to your conditioner but do a strand test first because henna may cause breakage for some people. My henna treatment eliminated my shedding.
4. Reduce or eliminate heat use until the breakage has stopped.
5. Wear styles that put minimal stress on the areas where your hair is breaking most. For example tight ponytails.
6. Trim or cut if needed. If the breakage if caused by heat or chemical damage you will likely need to trim or cut the damaged hair.
7. Consult with a doctor if the breakage or shedding becomes excessive, particularly if noticed any bald or extremely thin spots.
